Job description
## About the Role Origin (formerly 10xConstruction) is building general‑purpose autonomous robots for the construction industry. As a Perception Engineer Apprentice you will help the robots "see" the job site by designing and deploying perception pipelines that fuse camera and LiDAR data, run deep‑learning vision models, and process point‑cloud geometry. ## Key Responsibilities - Develop 3D perception components for geometric scene understanding using depth sensors, LiDAR and RGB cameras. - Process and interpret spatial data (point clouds, depth maps, image streams) for environment modeling and task planning. - Train and integrate deep‑learning models for 3D semantic understanding and quality evaluation. - Design robust sensor‑fusion strategies that combine visual, inertial and spatial data for scene reconstruction and robot localization. - Benchmark and optimise perception models for edge compute platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson) using TensorRT or ONNX. - Collect and curate high‑quality datasets (real and synthetic) and automate training pipelines with experiment tracking. - Perform sensor calibration (camera, LiDAR, IMU) and develop checks to maintain calibration quality over time. - Collaborate across robotics teams (manipulation, navigation, cloud) to deliver production‑ready perception stacks. ## Qualifications & Skills - Strong grasp of linear algebra, probability and geometry; coursework or projects in computer vision or robotics perception. - Proficient in Python 3.x and modern C++ (C++17/20); comfortable with Git and CI workflows. - Experience with ROS 2 (rclcpp / rclpy) and custom message/launch setups. - Familiarity with deep‑learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow (classification, detection, segmentation). - Hands‑on work with point‑cloud processing (voxel grids, KD‑trees, RANSAC, ICP). - Exposure to sensor‑calibration algorithms; knowledge of libraries like Ceres or GTSAM is a plus. - Experience with point‑cloud libraries (PCL, Open3D) and real‑time optimisation tools is advantageous. ## Benefits Origin offers a fast‑paced, research‑driven environment working on cutting‑edge autonomous robotics for construction. Apprentices gain mentorship from a talent‑dense team of engineers from top institutions, access to high‑fidelity simulation platforms, and the opportunity to see their work deployed on real construction sites.
